As the summer reaches its midpoint, it's time to start thinking about antiquing in New Hampshire. Between Northeast Auctions' annual Summer Americana Auction and the shows in Manchester (and this year, in nearby Marlborough, MA, a sale at Skinner), there loads of great stuff to look at, to learn about, and to buy!
I [Andrew] will be there, visiting friends and colleagues at the shows and previewing the Skinner auction. Sadly, I won't be able to get to the Northeast sale. But, I'm sure I'll see plenty of great stuff.
So, if you find yourself in NH in a few weeks, be on the lookout for a man with no gray hair (i.e., me, a young collector who actually has a little bit of gray). I'll also be picking up some consignments for Garth's fall auctions and I'll be happy to do so for you as well!

I'm thinking of going to Manchester for a day. I've never done a big week like this before. DO you have any tips on what to see? How to approach dealers, etc? To be honest, crowds and aggressive shoppers make me a bit nervous.
Great that you're coming...you'll have a blast! One day is not much time, so whether you do one show or three depends on whether you are quick browser or a lingerer. There are many great dealers and tons of great stuff. We would definitely recommend the Mid-Week Show and stop in and see Sumpter Priddy, David Good & Sam Forsythe, Elliot and Grace Snyder, and Jim Stoma at Latcham House Antiques. All are highly knowledgeable and easy to approach and talk with. Tell them we told you to stop in for a visit. But you needn't limit yourself to those dealers, talk to any and all, most are very approachable and happy to get to know a new collector. At the NHADA Show, you have Joan Brownstein and Peter Eaton, great furniture and portraiture, Russack and Loto have great reference books (which any collector needs shelves full of), and Jewett and Berdan of Maine are great guys with a great eye.
Don't be shy...just stick your hand out and say, "Hi, I'm Brooke, how are you?"
And we say this somewhat tongue in cheek...in this market, you likely don't need to worry about huge crowds or aggressive shoppers. :)

THanks for the tips. I did the NHADA show and had a great time. I went on Friday and it seemed to be the right call since it sounds as if things were busy on Thursday. I knew dealers wouldn't have as much time if there were live customers to attend to. I wasn't as interested in buying (this time) as learning. Many folks were really super. I learned a TON.
Glad you had a good time, and you've hit on one of our secrets - slow days at shows are better in many ways. People are more relaxed, have a bit more time to chat. Keep us posted on how you're doing!
